Essential Question

1) How strong of an effect does the media have on a person's belief? Can the media change ones belief on an issue?

2)

  •  I chose this as my essential question because I have noticed that people have many different views and are not willing to change their views no matter what one person says. I want to see if the media has some effect on changing their mind or solidifying their belief.
  • What excites me most about is that I get to go out in to the world and ask and find many different opinions. Hall county is a lot more polarized than people think.
  • Yes because I want to find out how much of an influence the media has on someones day-to-day life.

Youth face many challenges today. Youth may seem to lack the responsibility and strong work ethic to actually have a job, yet that is not the case for many young adults. Many youths are hard working (at least most of my friends are) and love to work. They set goals and that ultimate goal is to make money. Social intelligence is showing character and caring for others. Social intelligence is key for any person trying to be friendly, personable, and well mannered. Being presentable spoke to me the most. In my internship it is all about grabbing the viewers attention and making them want to read more about it. You have to be presentable.

This past month at The Times was very informative. I learned a lot of new things while at The Times. I kept learning about how to write AP style which is quite different from your regular style of writing you were taught in school. I got out in to the field and reported on articles and took pictures and videos. I have helped one of my mentors by helping her write articles for the "Get Out" section of The Times.
One class that has helped me would be AP U.S. History. That class has helped me become a better writer.

11/2

The goal I have met while at The Times is to get known in the community, because the only to get places in film and broadcast journalism is to have connections and know people.

Ways I have made my supervisors life easier is we help her write articles for the Get Out page about what is going on in the community

10/26 Mentorship write up

My Profile- I am a senior and high school and I am lucky enough to have received all the opportunities this year. I am planning to attend college and dual major in political science and either broadcast journalism or communication. I plan to go on to law school after that and hopefully get a career in the broadcast journalism industry or government.

My internship- I found my internship after my first one did not work out so well. I currently intern at The Gainesville Times as a reporter for The Young edge. We write articles every week. We try and publish a article over every medium ranging from print, internet, and videos. I mainly specialize in video production. I help film, interview, and edit.

Internship perception

I used to be really into this HBO series called The Newsroom. It was about a fictional nightly news network with Jeff Daniels as the leading role. I got most of my insight of how journalism works.

It may seem silly that most of my insights came from a TV show but I was quite surprised how accurate the show was compared to interning at The Times. The main difference between the show and interning are the deadlines. Of course the TV show would not show reporters trying to meet deadlines because it is not interesting for a TV show, but I have learned at The Times that deadlines are IMPORTANT. Reporters at The Times must publish an article everyday, luckily for us interns we only need to publish one or two articles a week.

Even though we only have to publish one or two articles a week it is still very time consuming for us because we do not have the same amount of time work on articles like the Full-time employees have, plus we do not have not gone off to journalism school to master the profession.

I feel if I try my best to manage my time well and think about everything that's going on around me, I would have more ideas for articles so I won't get the occasional blank white screen contemplating what I should write about.

HMP Annotated Bibliography

Koile, Kevin. "High School Students Learn About The Journalism Industry." K2 Radio. K2 Radio, 5 Oct. 2015. Web. 06 Oct. 2015

More than 100 students from all around wyoming attended The State Press Association Journalism Convention. The students learned a wide array of topics from photography, interviewing techniques, and journalistic writing. This is important to them because they are in a such a small town that most of the time current events of what's going on don’t get around as well.

While the students only went over some of the topics in one convention. At The TImes I am learning a wider array of topics and more in depth of each topic throughout the whole year. I can use these skills that I am learning not just for journalism, but for many other skills such as communication, writing, and people skills. I hope to use this article later to help compare my mentorship with what these students did at this convention.

Time Management 9/8

Time management is an important factor in all aspects of the workplace. I try my best to manage time just by setting exact time frames on things that need to be done. I can set reminders in my phone to remind myself when I need to start something. Don't get me wrong, procrastination happens to the best of us, but the main way to fight that is to shut out all outside distractions and just get your work done

Tim Elmore "Growing Leaders" 8/31

Tim Elmore posted a submission on his blog titled "Growing leaders". He covered topics that interns face today.

Yes the mentor had problems with his interns mainly because he did not have the mindset to run an internship. You have to be focused and able to teach these interns, not treat it as a one time job, Mentors need to help students far beyond the internship and on in to college and the workplace.

In my mentorship, my mentor looks past the present and in to the future by showing us how these skill sets can help us later on.

Work Ethic

Work ethic is an important part of the workplace, so you can be apart of a healthy, friendly, and productive workplace. Great work Ethic starts with communication, you must be approachable, friendly, and have great communication skills to function properly in a workplace, you must always get along with your peers.

How I learned what I know about myself most, is that I remember how I would act in real life situations. When a problem arises I always try my best to keep a cool head and not let my emotions get in the way of the problem. Keeping calm and collective is the first thing you want do when a problem arise. Secondly you need to work well with others. Being in a workplace is like being on a team(I know that is cliche but it's a good example) you all have to co-operate well with each other in order to succeed

Communication

In the business environment you always have to maintain a certain level of professionalism when it comes to communicating. Communication varies across all mediums and should be applied in and out of the workplace, each medium of communication should be approached differently when it comes to being professional. A lot of different aspects go in to consideration when trying to be professional. Each situation differs because there will usually be a lack of a certain aspect as shown in slide 4 of the communication slideshow.

You should always communicate to friends and family in a respectful and professional manner. When talking to an employer you must speak clearly and never interrupt. Always answer questions thoughtfully.

Being in the film industry you must showcase all forms of communication because each medium overlaps one another. When talking to my mentor I must be honest all the time and speak clearly with my mentor and co-workers in order to run a proper working film set.

Article Reflection

The article is stating that we need to be hard working, punctual, and always ready for a task.

I believe I can use these qualities in the film or broadcast journalism industry to help me achieve my goals in the workplace and get along with other.

Monday assignment TED Talk

JD Russo says in his Ted Talk that humans are aware of social issues that affect our everyday lives, yet we do not take action on these issues. We are apathetic to many of these social issues because they do not directly affect us. I want to use my leadership skills to help everyone in their problems. I'll use this idea in the workplace because in the film industry especially detail is important, every little thing is important.

One issue I am passionate about is equal rights, ranging from racial equality to marriage equality. I can use my skill and career in film to document peoples lives and struggles to broadcast to the world.

HMP day 1 assignment

I envision to gain the knowledge about the film industry to help launch myself into a film or broadcast journalism career after college. I will take many actions to ensure I get the most from my experiences, like clear and proper communications skills, patience and learning to work well with others, using teamwork, and being respectful to my superiors and always do what they tell me to do.
